چکیده

Journal of the Arab Society for Medical Research 2012, 7:33–37 Background/aim An impaired lipid metabolism is often observed in patients with chronic liver diseases. This study was carried out to determine the lipid profile in cirrhotic patients with and without hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to determine whether it relates to the severity of cirrhosis in Upper Egypt. Patients and methods In an analytical cross-sectional study, 74 patients with cirrhosis and 36 patients with cirrhosis and HCC (cases) and 65 age-matched and sex-matched healthy individuals (control) were studied from the Tropical Medicine and Gastroenterology Department and Internal Medicine Department, Assiut University Hospital. For all the participants, the following was carried out: clinical evaluation, abdominal ultrasound (US) examination, and laboratory investigations including the lipid profile [total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)]. Results In cirrhotic patients with and without HCC, there was a significant decrease in serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and HDL levels compared with the control group. Comparison of the lipid profile with the severity of cirrhosis indicated that serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL but not HDL levels decreased linearly with progression of liver damage (Child C vs. Child A). The HDL level was significantly lower in cirrhotic patients with HCC than in cirrhotic patients without HCC. Conclusion The lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL levels) is impaired in cirrhotic patients with and without HCC. The lipid profile (but not HDL) is inversely correlated with the severity of cirrhosis. The HDL level is significantly lower in cirrhotic patients with HCC than in cirrhotic patients without HCC.

DISCRIMINATION OF HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA FROM CIRRHOTIC NODULES BY AgNOR STAIN

Discrimination of regenerative cirrhotic nodules of the liver (CN) from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is sometimes difficult. We examined the utility of AgNOR staining in this context. Fifteen cases of HCC and 25 cases of CN were stained by AgNOR method and the mean AgNOR number for one hundred nuclei in each case was determined. There was a significant difference between the mean AgNOR c...

Antioxidant effects of gold nanoparticles on Schistosoma mansoni induced granuloma, in vitro

Objective(s): Schistosomiasis and hepatitis C virus [HCV] co-infection is common among the Egyptian population. Co-infected patients have higher rate of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential role of gold nanoparticles on granuloma in vitro. Materials and Methods: In the current study, granulocytes were isolated f...

Nitric Oxide is a Potential Diagnostic Marker for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer in men and the seventh most common in women. This cancer varies widely in incidence throughout the world, with rising incidence in Egypt. HCC is considered the second most frequent cause of cancer incidence and mortality among men in Egypt. This study aimed to estimate the serum levels of nitric oxide (NO) and glutathione reductase ...

Outcomes and predictors of in-hospital mortality among cirrhotic patients with non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding in upper Egypt.

BACKGROUND/AIMS Variceal bleeding is one of the most frequent causes of morbidity and mortality among cirrhotic patients. Clinical endoscopic features and outcomes of cirrhotic patients with non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB) have been rarely reported. Our aim is to identify treatment outcomes and predictors of in-hospital mortality among cirrhotic patients with non-variceal ...

Antiviral Profile of Brown and Red Seaweed Polysaccharides Against Hepatitis C Virus

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has infected 3% of the population worldwide and 20% of the population in Egypt. HCV infection can lead to hepatocellular carcinoma and death. The presently available treatment with interferon plus ribavirin, has limited benefits due to adverse side effects. Seaweeds have become a major source of new compounds to treat viral diseases. This work aimed to study the effect o...
